As you must have noticed, Google has given a new look to their sign up page, this new look doesn't guarantee an easy process of account recovery.

Although I think Google has brought back the recovery option where you will have to answer a question in order to gain access to reset Google account.

Now, there are different categories of issues that revolve around Gmail password recovery,

Some persons have forgotten their Gmail login password,

Some have forgotten both their Gmail password and security question.

Not having access to your Gmail account simply means not having access to your Emails, and unfortunately, it also means not having access to other platforms like youtube, Google+, Google maps, Google drive, and other useful platforms. Not to worry, In a bit, you'll learn how to reset Gmail password.

Riding on;

Take this advice seriously;

If your Gmail account is not blocked yet, or maybe you have another Google account without the log in issue, you really should check out this post I wrote an article on securing your Google account;

Following all the details listed in that post will give you an 80% guarantee of retrieving your Google account whenever you get locked out.

Moving on;

I'll take you on this ride, step by step.

Note:Be careful not to fall into "the scammers trap" Anyone that promises to unlock your Google account for a fee is not probably but DEFINATELY a FAKE!

There is no phone number that you can call to help you unlock your gmail account.

The first thing I will advise you to do in my guide on how to reset Gmail password is to;

TRY TO REMEMBER YOUR PASSWORD

Most people really don't care about this but it actually saves you from the stress of trying to reset Gmail password. Trust me it is difficult and frustrating when resetting the Gmail password.

So, Like I earlier said, you should try to remember your password. As funny or annoying as this may sound, you should really try to remember your password.

Hey! You set the password, so DIG DEEP……………………………..

This totally works for me;

Most times I get frustrated trying to log in to my numerous online accounts;

And this helps me to remember my password.

Tips I Use For Remembering A Password

  • Calm down, Don't push yourself, the password is up there in your head somewhere.
  • Cycle through passwords for others accounts.
  • Meditate, Seriously you can't remember that password if you are too eager and restless.
  • Try out possible passwords you would use. I am no magician but it could be your Name, Age, Date of Birth, or maybe a secret.
  • Ask yourself, " what password would I probably use "?

If you have tried the steps above and you still can't remember your Gmail password? or maybe your account was Hijacked?

Then your case is serious, we really need to move on;

Here is the part where you would have to follow attentively;

So I thought, Hey Beejay!Why not make this post fun for your readers!And bada bing, bada boom, I came up with Phases.

You might be wondering:

Phases???

Well YES, Hey! Don't judge me just yet.

Note:If you didn't activate some of these options as recovery options for your Google account you may not see them while trying to activate your account. Google wants to secure accounts at all costs.

If you are unable to prove to Google that you actually own the account that you are trying to reset, they'll literally pay deaf ears and blind eyes to your reset request.

So, Google did some changes to its platform. If you are like me and you have set up a few recovery options here's how to reset Gmail password.

Step 1. Go to Gmail.com.

Step 2. Input your email ID.

Step 3. Click on more ways to sign in.

Step 4. Click on forgot password.

After clicking on forgot password, you will be redirected to a page where you will see options to help you with Gmail password recovery.

How To Reset Gmail Password

Phase 1;

  • The first option you would see will ask you to enter the last password you remember. Do this. If you can't remember the last password you used, click on try another way.

how to reset gmail password

  • You should now see another prompt asking you to confirm the phone number that you added to your Google account. Enter your phone number and click on send.

reset gmail password

  • When you have received the verification code, simply insert the code into the box provided by Google to verify it is you.

Wait…….What?

Cannot reset your password with a code by text?

You didn't give Google a phone number for verification?

You lost the number you gave to Google? If you did lose your phone number in an event of a theft, in most countries you can visit your service provider, complain to them and they'll give you a new sim card with your old number.

If you can't retrieve your number, then your case is quite serious;

Your next hope would be going to the Google Account Support page, you will be asked some questions for verification purposes.

So, that takes us to phase 2

recover gmail password

Phase 2;

If you added an extra layer of security to your Google account by providing recovery details then you will probably have different options that would help you in resetting your Gmail password.

If you didn't? Then you probably won't see this Phase,It might take you to Phase 3 or 4.

So maybe you added a phone verification method to your Google account?

If you did? That's nice because this gives you an upper hand,

Simply;

  • Open the Account Support page.
  • Enter your Email address if you are asked to, then click/tap on NEXT.
  • If you are asked to receive the verification code via text(Phase 1), ignore and tap on "try another way".
  • You should then see a request asking you if you would want to get a prompt on your device?. (Be sure to have your device handy).

recover google password

  • On your mobile device, you will receive a prompt, Tap on YES,then tap on the number showing on your log in screen.

recover google password

  •  On the next page, Select a strong password, and you are good to go.

This is an awesome way to recover your Gmail account if you forgot your password, but for this phase to work you should have already added your mobile device as a recovery option.

If you did not set your mobile device as a Google Account recovery option, then you would probably see Phase 3 and not phase 2.

Phase 3;

  • You will have to open the Account Support page Again.
  • Enter your Email account and proceed.
  • Skip any Phase that didn't work for you, You can skip by tapping/clicking on (Try a different question).
  • Enter complete recovery Email. (You must have already added a recovery email address for this to work).

recover google password

  • Tap/click on send and wait for Google's reply on the recovery Email's inbox.

Be sure to check the recovery email, If it doesn't look familiar or you no longer have access to it then you have to read Reset Google Password Phase 4.

If you didn't give Google a recovery email then your case just got to a whole new level of difficulty;

Seriously, It gets better/worse:

Moving on to the next phase.

Phase 4;

So you checked the recovery Email and it is not familiar? Or you Don't have access to it again?

Don't give up just yet;

Before Going ahead with phase 4, you should think!. Your recovery Email could be your Yahoo mail or your friend's Email account…..

Moving On;

Phase 4 is really difficult.

It is literally a guessing game for some.

  • Open the Google Account support page again.
  • Enter your Email Address if it prompts you to.
  • Skip previous phases that were not of help until you get to where you see Month and Year.
  • You will have to answer a difficult question "When did you create this Google account" If you can provide the correct month and year then you have a shot at resetting your Gmail password.

recover google password

If this still doesn't work for you, then your case is getting to a whole new level of difficult……..

Just so you'd know, I was reading an article somewhere and I Learned that Google no longer creates Security questions and answers, but if your account is old enough you would still have that option.

I sincerely do not know how true this is.

But I do know that another way of resetting your Gmail password is by answering a secret question provided by Google. A question they feel only you would have the answer to.

And that leads us to;

phase 5

Skip the previous phases if they are still not working for you. You still have another shot at retrieving your Google account.

  • Open Google's Account support page again.
  • Skip previous phases till you get to where you would "Answer the security question you added to your account".

All you will have to do afterward is provide the correct answer to the security question you are set.

recover google password

There's a challenge though. After successfully completing phase 5 you might be redirected to phase 3 where you will need to enter a recovery email address.

I don't blame Google though. I mean, If someone knew my childhood best friend's name, the person will have access to my Gmail account.

So, the redirect is not actually a bad idea after all. But it is annoying though.

Forgot your Gmail Password And Secret Question?

If you cannot remember the answer to the secret question you set on Google, I'll be frank with you, Retrieving your Gmail account will be impossible.

If you are unable to provide Google with correct information that they will use to verify your ownership of the account, then you might just have to start thinking of creating a new Google account.

As sad as it may sound, That's just the way it is, Google will not bend the rules for you.

Something New

So, this Next option is a new one.

Big shout out and thanks to Google for giving us hope to recover our Google Accounts when hacked or when we have forgotten our passwords and have no access to the recovery phone number or Email address.

So, I tried to recover an old Email of mine and got this mail from Google.

Hello,
We're now reviewing the information that you provided about [email protected], and we'll reply to you soon. You can check the status of your request at any timehere.

In the meantime, here are our most common troubleshooting fixes:
Back-up options

If you're having trouble signing in to web-based Google Services (like Gmail or Calendar) because you can't get a verification code on your primary phone, try using your back-up options: back-up phone or back-up codes.

Application-specific passwords

If you're having trouble accessing an application on your mobile device
(like the Gmail app) or an email client (like Outlook and Thunderbird),
you may need to use an application-specific password, instead of your
personal password, when you sign in to them.

Sincerely,
Lily

Here's proof

Now, Before this method will work for you, you will need to provide Google with information that will make them believe you are the actual owner of the account.

My advice? Try to guess an answer to one of the questions atleast.

If you tried to recover your Google account using any of the steps above and you end up seeing this image below.

Then you need to read this long text below.

I know it's annoying, but I am trying my best to help you.

Gmail Password Recovery Tips

Let's go over some basic Google Tips to help you recover your Google Account.

  • Go back to the Account recovery page .
  • As you complete the steps, use as many of the tips below as you can.

If you tried to recover your Google account and got the error message "Google couldn't verify this account belongs to you" there's no harm in trying again.

  • Answer as many questions as possible

Yeah, I know I told you to click on the try another method link, but if you Google kicks against this. Don't skip questions, if you are not sure of an answer to a question, you should take your best guess rather than moving on to another question.

  • Use a familiar device & location

If possible:

  • Use a computer, phone, or tablet that you frequently use to sign in.
  • Don't use differnet browsers, use the same browser (like Chrome or Safari) that you usually use.
  • Be in a location where you usually sign in, like at home, work or school.
  • Be exact with passwords & answers to security questions

Details matter, you definitely do not want to send typos to Google. Take your time, think before sending answers to security questions. Also, pay attention to uppercase and lowercase letters.

If you're asked for the last password you remember, enter the most recent one you recall.

  • If don't remember your last password: Use a previous one that you do remember. The more recent it was, the better.
  • If you can't confidently recall any previous passwords: Take your best guess.

When answering security questions and you don't remember the answer? take your best guess.

If you know the answer but didn't recover your account on your first attempt, consider a different variation of the answer. For example, try "NY" instead of "New York" or "Tom" instead of "Thomas".

Try all the possible variations you can think of.

  • Find out when you created your account

I know it is almost impossible to do this, but you have to try.

If you cannot remember the month and year you created your Google Account, here are some tips to help you find it.

  • Look for a sign-up email. If you don't have access to the email for the account, look for a welcome message from Google or Gmail. If you can't, check for a verification email on another account that you used way back.
  • Ask your contacts/friends. If you use Gmail, ask friends and family when they first got an email from your account.
  • Think about related events or purchases. Try to remember if you created your account when you:
    • Had an important life event, like graduating.
    • Bought a new device. Look for any receipts or contracts that could be helpful.

If you still can't remember the date you created your Google Account after all the steps, then……… Take your best guess.

  • Enter an email connected to your account

If you're asked to enter an email address you can check now, you should enter the one that you have previously added to your account. Here are some examples:

  • A recovery email address helps you get back in and is where Google will send you security notifications.
  • An alternate email address is one you can use to sign in.
  • A contact email address is where you get information about most Google services you use.
  • Add helpful details

So, on the Google Account recovery page, here's is the last tip.

If you're asked why you can't access your account, include helpful details.

Some examples are:

  • You're traveling.
  • You get a specific error message.
  • You think your account was compromised because of malware or another reason.
  • You changed your password last week and can't remember it.

If your description matches the information Google has, the similarity can help your case.

After you must have submitted the correct information to Google, they will review your Gmail recovery request, if it is successful, you should get this message below.

Click on the Get started button and it will direct you to a page where you can enter your new Google password.

Some other tips that might help

  • If you do not have access to the phone number you used to sign up for your Google account, you could try contacting your service provider.
  • If you do not have access to the email you used as your recovery Email when setting up your account, you could try resetting the Password for that Email.
